(5/19/09) Rebuilding the economy is a top priority for Congress as it works with President Obama to move America in a New Direction. This week, Congress is sending the President legislation to bring common sense reform and consumer protections to the U.S. financial system and rein in the waste, fraud and abuse in federal spending.
The economic blueprint Congress passed and The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act comprise a long term economic plan to create jobs, transition to a clean energy economy, make health care more affordable and build a workforce that can compete in the global economy. The Recovery Act is already pumping almost $1 billion a day into the American economy, as fast as can be done in an accountable and targeted way, to jumpstart our economy and create or save 3.5 million jobs.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee this week is making great progress toward consensus on a clean energy jobs plan that will unleash private sector investment in jobs and new technologies, move America toward energy independence, and reduce the pollution that is causing climate change.
At the same time, Congress isworking to bring reform legislation to offer the choice of affordable health care to all Americans before the full House by the end of July. The diversity of the committee represents the diversity of America, and finding common ground on these keys issues at the committee level is a crucial step forward.
