Hawaii to receive $203 million in stimulus funds for military facilities construction

Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Representative Neil Abercrombie announced today that Hawaii’s military bases and facilities will receive more than $203 million in stimulus funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, passed by Congress five weeks ago.

“This funding, which is over and above the annual Defense and Military Construction Appropriations bills, was passed by Congress to put people to work, many of them building, repairing, expanding and refurbishing high priority public works projects,” said Abercrombie, who chairs the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Air and Land Forces.  “These military construction projects are important to maintain the mission capability of our bases and add to the quality of life for our men and women in uniform and their families.”

Projects approved for funding in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, include:

  • Pacific Missile Range Facility; Repairs to Runways — $31,500,000;
  • Navy Installations; Photovoltaic Systems — $32,600,000;
  • Headquarters, U.S. Air Force Pacific; Repairs to HQ — $31,516,000;
  • Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe; Child Development Center — $19,360,000;
  • Naval Station Pearl Harbor; Wharf and Pier Repair--$ 37,219,000; and
  • Forty additional projects involving road, roof and bridge repair, water and wastewater system upgrades and Hickam Air Force Base runway and taxiway repairs.

“Hawaii is already seeing the economic benefits from the Obama Administration’s recovery bill,” Abercrombie said.  “We’re receiving federal funds to help build and repair schools, and for education and worker training and clean water projects.  It’s bringing funds to create or save 15,000 jobs over the next two years and to get our economy moving again.”
