Washington, D.C. -- Rep. Neil Abercrombie supported legislation that takes the first step toward a clean and green economy: the Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act. The legislation was approved in the House this afternoon by seven votes after several hours of debate. Abercrombie has been conferring this week directly with President Obama, and with the President’s chief energy advisor, Carol Browner.
“I’ve made my position very clear. Energy independence is life and death for Hawaii’s economic future and for United States national security interests,” said Abercrombie. “The Waxman-Markey bill is not perfect, but it does begin to move the country toward a clean, green economy.”
“President Obama and I are in complete agreement that it’s critical, when individuals, families and businesses are stretched to the limit just to get by, that we find a path to a renewable and more efficient American energy future.”
“With Hawaii’s abundant natural and renewable energy resources, we should be leading the way for the country. This legislation will help us get there.” Abercrombie said. “The alternative is more of the same. And continuing to do what we’ve been doing is just not a viable option, either to control energy prices or to deal with energy security.”
