King Touts Victory for Taxpayers and Kids, Deplores Liberal Political Maneuvers |

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Steve King took to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives this morning to confront an unusual maneuver by Congressional liberals. Speaker Nancy Pelosi forced a vote on an outdated Presidential veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), or hawk-i as we call it in Iowa.
Pelosi’s move is unusual because she agreed to a compromise on SCHIP last month that has already been signed into law. King pushed for the SCHIP compromise since the late summer. Pelosi’s political maneuver this afternoon, designed for press coverage instead of serious consideration, failed by a vote of 260-152.
King said, “Last fall, I committed to Iowans that I would report back, once all the political theatrics regarding SCHIP were over, to let them know how much money was saved. SCHIP was solved over a month ago, but Speaker Pelosi continued her liberal theatrics through today.
“I am pleased to report to Iowans the debate is over. A responsible SCHIP law was signed last month. Poor children didn’t lose their coverage and, contrary to the claims of liberals, were never in danger of losing it. Pelosi, Governor Culver and other liberals were denied their cornerstone of socialized medicine. Taxpayers have saved $35.6 billion.”
“Taxpayers and poor kids have won because $35.6 billion will NOT go to kids of wealthy families earning as much as $103,250 a year like Culver and Pelosi had planned. Taxpayers and poor kids have won because illegal aliens will NOT be able to get as much as $6.5 billion through Medicaid like Culver and Pelosi had planned.”
“Today, taxpayers and kids have won because the money will go only to children who are in need and because those children will not be saddled with the debt Culver and Pelosi had planned for them. SCHIP has been rescued as a responsible program from the jaws of disaster.”
