Remembering the Horrific Tragedy in Omaha

Washington, D.C.—Today, Congressman Steve King (IA-05) joined with the House of Representatives to honor the victims and their families of the Omaha mall shooting spree that took place on Wednesday, December 5, 2007.

"Tonight, the House honored the lives of the victims of the horrific events that took place in Omaha. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families, the first responders on the scene, and also the family of the perpetrator."

"Nebraska, our neighbors across the river, and Western Iowa will forever carry a deep sorrow for the tragedy of these losses and the circumstances that led to this crime," King said.

The tragic event took only six minutes and claimed the lives of eight, including John McDonald of Council Bluffs, IA who was Christmas shopping with his wife when the shooting began. Four others were injured, one being Fred Wilson a retired English Teacher of St. Albert’s School in Council Bluffs and former resident of Shenandoah, IA. The shooter killed himself before police arrived.

Congressman Steve King (R-IA) serves the people of the 5th District of Iowa, a district that shares a border with Nebraska. Council Bluffs, IA and Omaha combine as an economic unit, but also share civic and cultural achievements and tragedies.
