| Washington, D.C.—Congressman Steve King led a tribute to the late Congressman Wiley Mayne who died on May 27 in Sioux City at the age of 90. The four-term Member of Congress was an O’Brien County native, a leading attorney and Siouxland civic leader.
On the floor of the House of Representatives, Congressman King led a celebration of the life of Wiley Mayne and was joined by Iowa Congressmen Latham and Braley. While Congressman King represents the Siouxland today, Congressman Latham represented much of northwest Iowa before the 2000 redistricting process. Congressman Braley, of eastern Iowa, was a frequent collaborator with one of the late Congressman Mayne’s sons.
King recently said of the late Congressman, “He was of such great character that he lent HIS reputation to this institution, not the other way around.”
During the nearly 30 minute Congressional tribute, Mr. King and his colleagues remembered the character of Mr. Mayne who also served in the FBI and the Navy during World War II. King also cited comments written by readers of the Sioux City Journal’s obituary, in particular, one writer who remembered a brief visit with Congressman Mayne in 1968. King said, “Think of that. From 1968 until a little over a week ago, to have made that kind of impression upon a visitor here, that that would cause [the writer] to go to the keyboard and put those words in [almost 40 years later].”
