King Asks President Bush To
Secure Border, Enforce American Law

Washington, D.C.—Washington D.C. - Congressman Steve King challenged the President to enforce American law, while the President visited Capitol Hill to sell his amnesty plan for illegal immigrants.

“Thousands cross our southern border every night, in violation of American law, and President Bush’s answer is to try and change that law. Instead of empty promises and self-destructive amnesty, I call on the President to enforce our Rule of Law,” stated King.

Congress mandated the construction of 854 miles of fence but the Administration has built only 13 miles of new fence. Also, Customs and Border Patrol officers have confirmed the flow of illegal border crossings has not changed despite the President’s deployment of the National Guard and other highly publicized efforts.

King concluded, “Americans have no confidence this Administration will enforce current immigration law. Americans have no confidence a future administration will enforce future immigration law. Why would anyone accept the promise of future enforcement at the risk of sacrificing the Rule of Law?

The task of this Administration needs to be to accept defeat of the Senate amnesty bill and get on with the task of stopping the bleeding on our Southern border and applying all our resources to workplace enforcement.

This Congress, above all, must ensure that the entire 854 miles of fence are funded and insist the President build it. We can force all human traffic through our ports of entry, and we must.”

Congressman Steve King (R-IA) is the top Republican on the Immigration Subcommittee of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee. He is also Chairman of the innovative Conservative Opportunity Society, founded by Newt Gingrich.
