King: If the President Only Heard Americans Demand Border Security, He’s Not Really Listening

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Steve King reacted with great doubt today to an Administration statement that the still-dead Senate amnesty bill will be revived with a promise of more money to the border, if the bill were signed into law. The Administration’s statement comes on the heels of years of broken promises on border security.

“Why, in Heaven’s name, would the Administration try to buy votes for its dead amnesty proposal by promising what it has promised for years but failed to deliver? Is anyone really fooled? This has breeched into the absurd,” said King.

Last year, President Bush signed into law a Congressional mandate to build 854 miles of double fencing on the Southern border. Congress also funded that fence with $1.2 billion. Despite President Bush’s signature on both laws, the Administration has built only 13.01 miles of fence.

“Bush’s $4.4 billion border enforcement funding proposal is as empty as all the other promises to enforce the law. It’s the infantile brainchild of Senator Lindsay Graham, from the Kennedy-McCain school of open borders. This child of his is too cute by half,” King concluded. “Americans have no confidence this Administration will enforce current immigration law. Americans have no confidence a future administration will enforce future immigration law.”

Congressman Steve King (R-IA) is the top Republican on the Immigration Subcommittee of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee. He is also Chairman of the innovative Conservative Opportunity Society, founded by Newt Gingrich.
