Representative Steve King
5th Congressional District of Iowa

Where’s the Fence Mr. President?

Washington, D.C.—Congressmen Steve King (IA) and Congressman Ed Royce (CA) today introduced a national ad campaign by Grassfire.org titled “Where’s the Fence?” The tv/internet video ad satirizes the “Where’s the Beef?” ad from the 1980s.

Grassfire.org is a national non-profit organizing grassroots support for issues of national importance. Their ad campaign can be viewed online at www.wheresthefence.com.

King and Royce highlighted the importance of the border, stating, “Let's make one thing clear: The Secure Fence Act is law.   It is not a suggestion. Congress passed and the President signed a law that requires 854 miles of border fence to be built by the end of 2008.

The Bush Administration says it remains committed to securing the border and we intend to hold them to their word. We will continue reminding the Bush Administration of their obligation under the law to build the border fence. The law requires that fencing be installed along our porous Southern border, to stem the flow of illegal immigrants, drug smugglers and potential terrorist access into the United States.

Only 13 miles of the 854 miles of border fencing called for in the Secure Fence Act have been constructed. While it’s a start, it is unacceptable. We know from experience that the border fence works. With the establishment of the border fence project in San Diego, crime rates have fallen off dramatically - by 50 percent - vehicle drive-throughs have fallen, and San Diego is no longer one of the most prolific drug smuggling corridors. Extending the fence will allow the border patrol to focus its resources and better protect our border. It is time to draw a line in the sand and build a fence on it - it is a matter of national security.”

Rep. Steve King (IA) is the top Republican on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Rep. Ed Royce (CA) is the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Terrorism
