King Statement on President Bush’s
Address to the Nation on Our Mission In Iraq

“As the President stated this evening, the recent success of our efforts on the ground in Iraq means our troops can begin returning home.  We have reached a point in our war against Islamic Jihad where our commitment to victory shows the promise to yield a free and liberated Iraq.

In January, the Al-Anbar province of Iraq was considered a lost cause politically.  But through the efforts of our troops and the collaboration of Iraqi tribal leaders, violence in Al-Anbar has dramatically declined.  I visited the province capital in late July and could see that normalcy had returned to where the central marketplace looked like one in any other Middle Eastern market.  Still, Al Qaeda, Islamic extremists trained and supplied by Iran, and other Jihadists remain a threat to the security of the Iraqi people and their free government.

President Bush underscored the direct and objective reports of our top military leader and diplomatic emissary in Iraq, General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker.  It is important now that the American people come to together.  Unity and the consequences of a commitment to victory represent the hopeful alternative to the disastrous consequences of failure.

The same forces that threaten our future in the United States, threaten the future of a free Iraq.  We have a duty to support our troops, and by supporting the troops we also support the mission.”
