Washington, D.C.—Congressman Steve King today offered his appreciation to the patriots in our military who have been prisoners of war (POW) and those who are still missing in action (MIA). September 21st has been proclaimed by President Bush to be National POW/MIA Recognition Day.
In order to mark this day, the flag of the National League of Families POW/MIA will be flown over the White House, the Capitol, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, and the World War II Memorial.
State and local officials and private organizations are called upon to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies. POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday of September each year.
Almost 88,000 Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen are missing from past wars- 78,000 from World War II, nearly 8,100 from the Korean War, close to 1,800 from Vietnam, 125 from various operations during the Cold War and one from Operations Desert Storm. Four service members remain missing from Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“Each of us is indebted to these patriots and their families. I join the President in renewing our pledge to account for every missing American. We are blessed with many veterans in Iowa and many men and women who step forward to serve the preservation of our freedom. Let us remain committed to these patriots and those who have not returned,” stated King.
Congressman King has signed his name to House Resolution 111 that would establish a new Congressional committee to conduct “a full investigation of all unresolved matters relating to any United States personnel unaccounted for from the Vietnam era, the Korean conflict, World War II, Cold War Missions, or the Gulf War, including MIA's and POW's.”
If you are a veteran and have not received, or you have lost your military decorations, please call Congressman Steve King at (712) 224 – 4692 for assistance.
Congressman Steve King (R-IA) represents Western Iowa in the United States Congress and sits on the Agriculture, Judiciary and Small Business Committees
