Washington DC…U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson (IL-15) has voted in favor of legislation that would cover all meal expenses for American troops who have been hospitalized due to combat injuries while fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. As a cosponsor of H.R. 2998, Rep. Johnson was pleased that this subsistence exemption act unanimously passed the House and has now become a component of the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations for Defense and for the Reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan.
“Asking the men and women who’ve risked their lives to keep our country, and others, safe to pay for their meals while they recover from injuries they received while protecting our freedom is wrong,” stated Johnson. “Our troops pay an enormous price to protect our freedoms and should be honored for their courage, bravery and service. The least we can do as a grateful nation is pay for their meals while they are hospitalized.”
Under the current system, enlisted personnel and officers who are hospitalized due to war injuries are issued a bill for their meals they have eaten. When they are released from the medical facility, they can expect to pay $8.10 for each day they ate hospital meals. Johnson noted that this legislation eliminates that charge.
