Champaign, IL…As high school seniors prepare for their futures after graduation, U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson (IL-15) is encouraging students to consider applying to the U.S. Service Academies. Those interested in pursuing higher education combined with military service need to contact Rep. Johnson in his Champaign office in order to obtain the necessary application materials. The Service Academies include: West Point in New York State, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, or the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. The deadline to apply for admittance to any of these is November 15, 2003.
To be considered for an appointment to one of the Service Academies, an applicant must have a nomination from his or her Representative, Senator, or the Vice President of the United States. As the Representative from Illinois’ 15th District, Tim Johnson can nominate 10 qualified applicants for each “slot” open at each academy. By law, he can only have five students attending each academy at any time. Those applying through Rep. Johnson’s office must reside within the boundaries of Illinois’ current 15th District.
To be eligible for nomination, the student must be at least 17 years old, but not have passed his or her 22nd birthday as of July 1 of the year of admission. Applicants must also be unmarried, not pregnant, have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents, and be a U.S. citizen.

Again, the deadline for submitting applications is November 15, 2003; Rep. Johnson will make final decisions on appointments by year’s end.
