Johnson Lists Science Committee Accomplishments of 107th Congress
Homeland Security, Education, Economy enhanced through Committee action

Washington DC… As a freshman Member of the U.S. House Committee on Science, Rep. Tim Johnson (IL-15) said the Committee has been very productive during the 107th Congress.  Among its numerous accomplishments, the Science Committee has made great strides in better securing our country, enhanced our educational systems and focused efforts on creating a more modern environment for U.S. job creation and economic growth.

“The bipartisan tone that is prevalent on the Science Committee is really a model of how government needs to work to get the best results for Americans,” said Johnson.  “I am proud to be a part of this Committee, and equally as proud to be able to influence such important issues in this nation today as Homeland Security, education and job creation.”

A partial list of Science Committee Accomplishments over the past two years is as follows:

Homeland Security
· The Committee led the push to make science and technology a priority in the new Homeland Security Department because the War on Terror will be won in the laboratory as well as the battlefield.
· Cyber Security is greatly improved with passage of legislation that focuses on safeguarding American computer and information systems.
· Terrorist attacks on American water supplies would be detected and prevented through a bill that has cleared the House.

Education

· The creation of teaching scholarships to promote math and science education to college students.
· Science and math teachers would have opportunities to do research at universities and businesses through a new Master-Teacher program.

· Farmers will benefit from increased government funding to biotechnology.
· Additionally, producers would gain from legislation that encourages energy efficiency, renewable energy and the federal purchasing of biobased products.
