Rep. Johnson Announces Opening of “Do Not Call” Registry
Bipartisan measure overwhelmingly passed in February takes effect across the country

Washington DC… U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson (IL-15) joined the Federal Trade Commission in announcing the opening of the National "Do Not Call" Registry.  The Registry gives consumers a choice about the number of telemarketing calls they receive at home.  Registration is free and easy; it can be done online or by telephone.

“This program allows individuals and families to put their names on a national “do-not-call” list and opt-out of telemarketing calls,” explained Johnson.  “Should a telemarketer violate this system and call phone numbers on the list, that telemarketing company would be breaking the law and would pay up to $11,000 in fines, per incident.  The ‘Do Not Call’ Registry is long overdue and will be a very welcome program to thousands of my constituents who have long been burdened by this sales tactic.”

Consumers who have an email account can register online beginning today.  In fact, Rep. Johnson said within two hours of the Registry’s opening, more than a quarter million Americans signed up to block their phones from telemarketers.  To register online, visit WWW.DONOTCALL.GOV

In states west of the Mississippi (including Minnesota and Louisiana) consumers can register by phone beginning today Friday (6/27).  Consumers in Illinois and states east of the Mississippi may register beginning July 7.  Consumers must call from the number they wish to register.  To register by phone, call toll-free 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236).

Consumers who place their home or mobile telephone numbers on the registry by August 31 should see a decrease in calls after October 1, 2003.
