Washington, D.C. – Congressman Pete Visclosky issued the following statement today on the Conference Report on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which passed the House of Representatives with strong Buy American language included:
“Today we took the first step toward revitalizing our economy and rebuilding our country. The tasks ahead will not be easy and recovery will take time, but we are now headed in the right direction.
“I am pleased that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will go to the President’s desk with a strong Buy American provision for iron, steel, and manufactured goods. The provision ensures that the economic stimulus efforts will have a broad impact that includes our steel and manufacturing sectors. Steel is the heart of American industry and we are making certain that it powers our recovery and makes our nation strong again.
“People in Northwest Indiana can be confident that our steel mills will start making more steel and more steelworkers will be put to work. Our state will receive over $1 billion for infrastructure projects that will not only require tons of steel, but will create many construction jobs and lay the foundation for a vibrant new economy. On top of that, this bill cuts taxes for 95 percent of Americans.
“The White House estimates that the recovery and reinvestment plan will lead to 7,900 new jobs in Northwest Indiana. Those are jobs that we badly need. Those are jobs that I was proud to vote for today.” |
