Visclosky Announces Federal Support for Porter County Law Enforcement

Portage and Valparaiso Police Departments to Obtain Essential Equipment

Washington, D.C.  –  Congressman Pete Visclosky today announced that the Portage and Valparaiso Police Departments will receive federal assistance to obtain essential equipment aimed at enhancing law enforcement services provided to the community.

“Police officers maintain law and order on our streets and deserve every ounce of support we can give them to perform their jobs safely and effectively,” said Visclosky.  “In this time of tight municipal budgets, federal assistance is more important than ever to ensure our police officers have the resources they need to protect and serve our communities.  I am proud to support our police officers.”

The federal assistance is intended to support the prevention and control of crime and improve the criminal justice system by helping local law enforcement agencies acquire critical equipment.  The Portage Police Department will purchase Tasers, and the Valparaiso Police Department will purchase mobile computer units for its detective bureau.  Together, the Cities of Portage and Valparaiso will use a U.S. Department of Justice Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program award in the amount of $34,550 for these equipment acquisitions.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program allows local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own needs and conditions.  Grant funds can be used for local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice such as law enforcement programs, prosecution and court programs, prevention and education programs, corrections and community corrections programs, drug treatment and enforcement programs, planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs, and crime victim and witness programs.
