| WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Jerry Moran today announced he has introduced legislation with Congressman Tom Osborne (R-NE) to assist farmers in the Bostwick irrigation district by extending payment schedules. The Kansas portion of the Bostwick district is located in Republic, Jewell and Cloud Counties.
“Much of Kansas has been in drought for the last five years, and irrigators in these water districts have not been receiving adequate water,” Moran said. “This legislation will ease the burden on producers who are struggling in these difficult times.”
Farmers within these irrigation districts are required to maintain payments despite receiving insufficient water during times of drought. The legislation introduced by Moran, H.R. 4000, revises payment contracts between irrigation farmers and Kansas Bostwick Irrigation District No. 2, Webster Irrigation District No. 4, Nebraska Bostwick Irrigation District and Frenchman-Cambridge Irrigation District.
By extending farmers’ payment periods, this legislation will assist producers by reducing the amounts of their annual payments while maintaining their commitments to irrigation districts.
Similar legislation is expected to be introduced in the Senate. Moran is senior member of the House Agriculture Committee.
