WASHINGTON, DC –September 29, 2006The Radcliff Fire Department has been selected to receive a $306,229 grant through a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program, U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced today.

“The Radcliff community depends on the fire department for a quick response when there is an emergency.” said Lewis. “These funds will help ensure that the Department meets an elevated standard for full time staffing.

The purpose of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants is to help fire departments increase the number of frontline firefighters. The goal is for fire departments to increase their staffing and deployment capabilities and ultimately attain 24-hour staffing, assuring that communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards.

Lewis has been a longtime advocate in Congress for the needs of firefighters in the Kentucky’s Second Congressional District.

“Small communities face large expenses to staff fulltime firefighters,” said Lewis. “These grants can be a big help to departments like Radcliff to support part of the salaries of newly hired staff.”

SAFER is part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants under the Office of Grants and Training of the Department of Homeland Security.
