Lewis Announces $100,000 Grant for Hancock Co. Partners for a
Healthy Community and Healthy Youth
Funds will support drug prevention efforts in Hancock County

          WASHINGTON, D.C - U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced today that the Hancock County Partners for a Healthy Community and Healthy Youth will receive a $100,000 federal grant from Drug-Free Communities, a program administered by the Office of National Drug Control Policy in Washington, D.C.

“I congratulate Healthy Community and Healthy Youth for receiving this award,” said Lewis. “The Drug-Free Communities Program recognizes the great job this organization is doing to promote drug prevention in Hancock County. These funds will allow Hancock County Partners to expand their efforts to prevent substance abuse."

Hancock County Partners for a Healthy Community and Healthy Youth, founded in 2003, is committed to increasing public awareness about alcohol, tobacco and drug risks encountering Hancock County Youth. The organization is working to expand substance abuse prevention strategies mobilize by strengthening coordination and collaboration efforts. Hancock County was one of only 107 organizations across the country to receive Drug-Free Community grant assistance.

Rep. Lewis is a strong advocate for drug prevention efforts, working in Congress to ensure that federal, state and local agencies have the resources necessary to fight and win the war on drugs. A member of the House Methamphetamine Caucus, Lewis has secured over $2 million for eradication efforts over the past several years.

Lewis is also the lead sponsor of H.R. 713, the Agricultural Businesses Security Act of 2005, legislation that would encourage agricultural retailers to increase security measures on chemicals such as anhydrous ammonia, a main ingredient used in methamphetamine production. Lewis is also a cosponsor of the CLEANUP Meth bill, legislation to provide additional federal grants for education and eradication efforts and was an original cosponsor of the Combat Meth Act, a measure recently signed into law that regulates access to precursor drugs through quantity restrictions and rigid reporting requirements.
