WASHINGTON, DC –September 4, 2007The City of Owensboro has been selected to receive a $23,574 grant through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance program (Byrne-JAG), U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced today. Funds will be apportioned by the Owensboro Police Department to purchase new interoperable communications equipment.

“The Byrne-JAG Grant is an important program for Kentucky,” said Lewis. “The funds provided will help the Owensboro community improve law enforcement efforts by strengthening police communications capabilities.”

The Byrne-JAG program provides resources for personnel, equipment and training, correctional facilities and offender rehabilitation services. The program particularly encourages enhanced coordination and cooperation of federal, state, and local efforts.

The Owensboro Police Department will designate funds to install a portable power generator, desktop radios, satellite telephones, and a communications tower and antenna in the OPD mobile command. The purchase of interoperable communications equipment will link the OPD to the regional, state, and Federal public safety agencies in Kentucky including HAM radio operators.

Funding for the Byrne-JAG program was appropriated by Congress in the FY 2007 Appropriations Act for Science, State, Justice and Commerce.

Lewis has been a longtime advocate in Congress for the needs of law enforcement and emergency responders in Kentucky’s Second Congressional District. He has communicated with President Bush to oppose efforts to cut annual funding levels.

“Federal assistance programs are often a top priority for local law enforcement officials. I recognize more assistance is necessary and will continue to work hard to secure additional resources for local law enforcement.”
