WASHINGTON, D.C –July 25, 2007The United States House of Representatives approved a measure to designate $80,000 for the Shelby County Drug and Alcohol Advisory Council, U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced Wednesday. Funds were included as part of the Commerce, State, and Judiciary Appropriations Act of 2008 (H.R. 3093).

“These funds will help the Advisory Council to continue their good work addressing local substance abuse issues, particularly among youth,” said Lewis. “I commend the council for their cooperative, grassroots approach to this serious problem.”

The Shelby County Drug/Alcohol Advisory Council, Inc. serves Shelby County, KY, a community of unprecedented population growth and aggressive cultural transition. The Advisory Council intends to use funds to make the kinds of changes necessary to solidify partnerships and enhance education, intervention, and prevention efforts in the community.

“Through this grant, the Advisory Council intends to be the catalyst for change, strengthening all partnerships to embrace youth with protective factors, thereby insuring healthy and productive citizens of the future,” said Director Jessica Cox. “By effecting individual, family, environmental and policychanges, quality of life will be improved for all of Shelby County’s members.”

Tuesday’s action by the House is first step in the appropriations process. The Commerce, State, and Judiciary Appropriations Act will be considered in the U.S. Senate and by a joint Conference Committee before being sent to the President to be signed into law later this year.
