WASHINGTON, D.C - U.S. Representative Ron Lewis urged consumer caution today following recent stories concerning the safety of products imported into the United States.

“Americans depend on imported products for virtually every aspect of daily life,” said Lewis. “Several high profile incidents involving the safety of these products have raised the concern of consumers.”

Lewis recently participated in a House Ways and Means Committee hearing to examine methods to better ensure that products imported into the United States meet strict public health, product safety, and consumer protection standards. The assembled panel agreed that government regulators must be able to take quick action to identify and prohibit unsafe products entering the United States.

“This is a time of year when millions of Americans purchase gifts for children, grandchildren and charity organizations,” said Lewis. “Toy safety is a top priority for all of us concerned with import standards.”

The Toy Industry Association (TIA) has launched a website and toll-free telephone hotline to answer questions, offer safety tips from consumer safety experts, and provide current information on recalled toys.

These resources can be accessed free of charge by visiting www.toyinfo.org or by dialing the toll-free number, 1-888-884-TOYS.
