WASHINGTON, DC –September 5, 2007 – Western Kentucky University has been selected to receive a $278,881 grant through the U.S. Department of Education’s Upward Bound Veterans Program, U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced today. Funds will be applied to assist veterans in their preparation for college entrance.

“The Federal government has a special responsibility to those who have worn the uniform of our country,” said Lewis. “Programs such as Veterans Upward Bound provide important opportunities for veterans to further their education and build successful careers.”

Veterans Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately their higher education pursuits. The goal of Veterans Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

The grant, administered by Western Kentucky University, will be used to support academic instruction, tutoring, and postsecondary education application advising.

“I congratulate Western Kentucky University for their success in receiving this grant,” said Lewis. “The programs will provide a wonderful public service to the brave men and women who have made a personal sacrifice to protect our fundamental freedoms.”
