WASHINGTON, DC –September 5, 2007 Washington County emergency services have been selected to receive two federal grants totaling $35,742 through a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program, U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced today.

The Washington County Fire Department has been selected to receive $21,090 for operation and safety purposes. The Washington County EMS was awarded an additional $14,652 for similar application.

“The community depends on local fire and EMS services to protect lives and property when there is an emergency.” said Lewis. “But there are large expenses just to provide the basics necessary to do the job. These funds will help to enhance response capabilities and more effectively protect the health and safety of the public and emergency personnel.”

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program provides funding for qualified communities nationwide to be used for fire operations and the implementation of firefighter safety programs. This includes training, wellness and fitness, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, and modifications to fire stations and facilities

Lewis has been a longtime advocate in Congress for the needs of emergency services in the Kentucky’s Second Congressional District.

“Assistance to Firefighters grants can be a big help to smaller fire and rescue departments in need of a little extra assistance,” said Lewis.
