WASHINGTON, DC –August 22, 2007Hardin County has been selected to receive a $26,942 grant through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance program (Byrne-JAG), U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced today. Funds will be allocated by the state to local communities to support a broad range of crime prevention and control activities.

“The Byrne-JAG Grant is an important program for Kentucky,” said Lewis. “The funds provided will help local communities improve the criminal justice system through an increased emphasis on breaking the cycle of substance abuse, combating violence, and strengthening law enforcement capabilities.”

The Byrne-JAG program provides resources for personnel, equipment and training, correctional facilities and offender rehabilitation services. The program particularly encourages enhanced coordination and cooperation of federal, state, and local efforts.

The application was submitted on behalf of the Cities of Radcliff and Elizabethtown and the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office.

The Radcliff Police Department will use their funds to purchase three vehicle repeaters to strengthen current communication abilities. The Elizabethtown Police Department will designate their funds to purchase and install a mobile data computer for a police vehicle. The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office will apply their funds toward the purchase of two new vehicles. The three jurisdictions will also purchase a digital camera, three CPR kits, and locks for securing shotguns and patrol rifles.

Funding for the Byrne-JAG program was appropriated by Congress in the FY 2007 Appropriations Act for Science, State, Justice and Commerce.

Lewis has been a longtime advocate in Congress for the needs of law enforcement and emergency responders in Kentucky’s Second Congressional District. He has communicated with President Bush to oppose efforts to cut annual funding levels.

“Federal assistance programs are often a top priority for local law enforcement officials. I recognize more assistance is necessary and will continue to work hard to secure additional resources for local law enforcement.”
