WASHINGTON, D.C –July 25, 2007 – The United States House of Representatives approved a measure to designate $200,000 for the methamphetamine eradication efforts across Kentucky’s Second Congressional District, U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced Wednesday. Funds were included as part of the Commerce, State, and Judiciary Appropriations Act of 2008 (H.R. 3093).
“These funds will help local law enforcement officials pay for the cleanup and disposal of some very dangerous chemicals,” said Lewis. “We must continue our fight to ensure that Federal, State, and local authorities have the resources and support necessary to combat this growing epidemic. This is a top priority for me and many of my colleagues here in Congress.”
Funds will be directly allocated to local Drug Task Force Agencies to train new officers and assist efforts to locate and shut down methamphetamine laboratories. Law enforcement officials continue to be successful in combating illegal drug operations but face new costs associated with doing the job right.
“Kentucky Law Enforcement’s documented success in curtailing the illicit manufacturing and distribution of Methamphetamine is due, in part, to Congressman Ron Lewis,” said Daviess County Sheriff Keith Cain. “Both his efforts in passing comprehensive Meth related legislation and securing funding for local law enforcement, have resulted in a significant reduction of this horrendous drug’s availability in our communities.”
A member of the House Meth Caucus, Lewis has secured over $1.8 million for eradication purposes over the past several years. Lewis is also the sponsor of the Agricultural Businesses Security Act of 2005, legislation that would encourage agricultural retailers to increase security measures on chemicals such as anhydrous ammonia, a main ingredient used in methamphetamine production.
Tuesday’s action by the House is first step in the appropriations process. The Commerce, State, and Judiciary Appropriations Act will be considered in the U.S. Senate and by a joint Conference Committee before being sent to the President to be signed into law later this year.
