WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Army officials informed U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis (KY-02) today of plans to relocate four combat support teams, comprising 546 soldiers, to Ft. Knox as part of the Grow the Army initiative.
The new units include the 9th Engineer Battalion Headquarters, a Sapper Company, an Engineer Support Company, and a Mechanized Sapper Company.
“I am very excited about the addition of these operations at Ft. Knox,” said Lewis. “My colleagues and I continue to support efforts to build a military force that is strong in quality and quantity.”
Combat support teams provide specialized assistance to improve the mobility of brigade combat teams during battlefield operations. They are often involved in building logistical structures such as bridges and dismantling mines and other explosives.
“Today’s decision is a testament to all Fort Knox has to offer,” said Lewis. “Army officials recognize Fort Knox’s position as a premiere military installation with surrounding communities ideally suited for soldiers to live and a work.”
Army officials are working to place combat support teams closer to individual brigade commands for joint training purposes. An across the board Army force expansion has been authorized by the U.S. Congress.
