WASHINGTON, DC –June 14, 2007 – U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis announced today that the U.S. Army has awarded an $83M contract to initiate the design and construction of the new Army Human Resources Center at Fort Knox. The contract was officially awarded to Universal Construction Company Inc. of Huntsville, AL.
“One of the primary objectives of BRAC was to improve the efficiency of the military and create net savings for American taxpayers,” said Lewis. “I am glad that construction can now move forward without further delay to prepare base infrastructure for new operations.”
Contract funding was made possible by the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Care, Katrina Recovery, and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act of 2007 signed into law last month by President Bush. Lewis corresponded with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, during prolonged congressional debate earlier this spring, to express his concern that delays might compromise base and community development contracts and advance time necessary to properly prepare for BRAC-mandated transition.
Upon completion, the Army’s military personnel and recruiting functions will be entirely consolidated, bringing approximately 3,000 new personnel to Fort Knox beginning in late 2008. The Army currently leases facilities at four separate locations.
Construction is projected to begin soon with an estimated completion date of June 11, 2010. The cumulative total for the contract is $184M.
“These are exciting times for Fort Knox and surrounding communities, said Lewis. “In the face of significant changes, I am confident that Fort Knox will continue to maintain its standard of excellence, and grow as an integral part of our nation’s defense capacities.”
Lewis serves as chairman of the Regional BRAC Task Force, an organization working with community representatives and relevant state agencies to evaluate new opportunities for regional economic growth during realignment.
