WASHINGTON, D.C –July 24, 2007The United States House of Representatives approved a measure to designate $364,000 for the Green River Ferry in Edmonson County, U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced Tuesday. Funds were included as part of the Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development, and Independent Agencies Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2008 (H.R. 3074).

“These funds will help to improve the convenience, safety, and accessibility of those who live and work in the region surrounding Mammoth Cave National Park,” said Lewis.

The Ferry is the only mode of transportation to deliver Edmonson County residents, Park employees, and emergency vehicles across the Green River. Low water conditions force frequently closures, causing significant travel problems and emergency concerns.

“The continuous operation of the Green River Ferry is integral to park operations and of great importance to our surrounding neighbors,” said Mammoth Cave National Park Superintendent Patrick Reed. “We appreciate Congressman Lewis’ and the Kentucky’s Transportation Cabinet’s assistance in securing funding for the initial pre-design phase of this work. Now with Congressman Lewis’ continued support in securing additional funding, we will be able to go forward with the formal design phase of this project.”

Lewis secured an additional $250,000 in 2004 to conduct a pre-design analysis of various construction proposals.

Tuesday’s action by the House is first step in the appropriations process. The Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development, and Independent Agencies Appropriations Act will be considered in the U.S. Senate and by a joint Conference Committee before being sent to the President to be signed into law later this year.
