WASHINGTON, DC –August 10, 2006The East Barren Volunteer Fire Department has been selected to receive a $114,997 grant through a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program, U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced today.

“The Glasgow community depends on the department for a quick response when there is an emergency.” said Lewis. “These funds will help provide firefighters with the tools necessary to handle emergencies in the most safe and efficient way.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program provides funding for qualified communities nationwide to be used for fire operations and the implementation of firefighter safety programs. This includes training, wellness and fitness, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, and modifications to fire stations and facilities

Lewis has been a longtime advocate in Congress for the needs of firefighters in the Kentucky’s Second Congressional District.

“Small fire departments face large expenses just to provide the basics necessary to do their jobs,” said Lewis. “These grants can be a big help to those departments in Kentucky DHS determines are most in need of a little extra assistance.”
