WASHINGTON, DC –October 10, 2007 – U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis (KY-02) spoke out today against recent efforts to remove references to God from the official certificates that accompany United States flags flown over the U.S. Capitol Building.
“It is an outrage that some officials in Washington continue to work to eliminate even the most tacit references to God and faith from public institutions,” said Lewis. “Each daily session of Congress begins with a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, affirming that we are One Nation Under God. The traditions of the U.S. House of Representatives should continue to reflect that truth.”
Constituents commonly request flags flown over the Capitol from their Member of Congress. These requests are managed by the Office of the Architect of the Capitol.
The Acting Architect recently overturned the longstanding tradition of referencing God in official certificates sent to constituents commemorating the date and authenticity of flags that have flown over the U.S. Capitol Building.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has oversight authority to instruct the Architect to restore the mention of God to the certificates, a practice that has endured in the U.S. House for generations.
“This policy does not reflect the will of a majority of Americans,” said Lewis. “I call on Speaker Pelosi to immediately intervene to restore this important tradition.”
