WASHINGTON, DC -September 20, 2007 – U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis (KY-02) and U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth (KY-03) toured the United States Botanic Gardens Tuesday to view its Celebrating America’s Public Gardens display, including contributions from the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in Clermont, KY.

The Congressmen were joined by Mr. Tom Block, a Bernheim Forest Trustee and great-grandson of the institutions founder.

The United States Botanic Gardens, working in conjunction with the American Public Gardens Association, organized the summer exhibit to celebrate the diversity and importance of American public gardens. The Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is one of twenty garden institutions from across the nation participating in the exhibit.

Horticultural staff from each garden were asked to design and construct displays representative of their institutions. The Bernheim Forest display includes trees, grass and wildflowers indigenous to central Kentucky.

Rep. Lewis was instrumental in securing $1.3M for the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in 2005 through the Forest Legacy program.

“The Bernheim Forest is an important institute for research conservation and a true treasure to those of us in Kentucky with an appreciation for native horticulture,” said Lewis. “I applaud the staff at the Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest for their achievement, showcasing the unique natural beauty of our region to thousands of visitors here in our nation’s capital.”

The Celebrating America’s Public Gardens exhibit will remain on display through October 8th.
