WASHINGTON, D.C –July 24, 2007 – The United States House of Representatives approved a measure to designate $50,000 for the Western Kentucky University Business Incubator, U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced Tuesday. Funds were included as part of the Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development, and Independent Agencies Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2008 (H.R. 3074).
“These funds will assist Western Kentucky University in their efforts to help entrepreneurs and small businesses get started in the community,” said Lewis. “The incubator continues to be an important resource generating new economic vitality in south central Kentucky.”
The Western Kentucky University Business Incubator is the product of a lucrative partnership between Western Kentucky University (WKU), the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce, and various state agencies to develop new business in areas of Bowling Green targeted for economic revitalization. The WKU Business Incubator provides technical assistance, counseling and business expertise through qualified faculty and students.
"We are most appreciative of Congressman Lewis' continued support of this important program,” said Western Kentucky University President Dr. Gary Ransdell. “The success of the WKU Small Business Accelerator is unparalleled in our region of Kentucky, and these funds will have a significant impact in helping us to add to the growing list of new jobs and new economy enterprises converging on South Central Kentucky."
Tuesday’s action by the House is first step in the appropriations process. The Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development, and Independent Agencies Appropriations Act will be considered in the U.S. Senate and by a joint Conference Committee before being sent to the President to be signed into law later this year.
