WASHINGTON, DCThe Bowling Green Police Department has been selected to receive a $48,500 grant through a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program, U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced today.  Funds will be used to purchase new radio equipment.

“The community depends on the police department for a quick response when there is an emergency.” said Lewis. “These funds will help provide the department with the tools necessary to handle their job in the most safe and efficient way.

The Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP) helps to ensure that smaller communities and rural areas can acquire specialized equipment and training to strengthen their overall level of preparedness. CEDAP works in conjunction with other Department of Homeland Security grant programs to enhance local emergency response capabilities, risk management abilities, and interoperable communications.

CEDAP also provides high-tech equipment such as personal protective gear, thermal imaging, night vision, video surveillance, and chemical and biological detection devises to qualified communities.

Funding for the $50 million CEDAP program was appropriated by Congress in the FY 2006 Appropriations Act for the Department of Homeland Security.

Lewis has been a longtime advocate in Congress for the needs of law enforcement and emergency responders in Kentucky’s Second Congressional District.
