Lewis Opposes Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants
Says U.S. Senate agreement rewards illegal activity

WASHINGTON, DCU.S. Rep. Ron Lewis (KY-02) released the following statement today in response to the U.S. Senate agreement on immigration reform:

“I have serious concerns with the immigration ‘compromise’ bill announced yesterday in the U.S. Senate. Any proposal that includes amnesty, as this does, is the wrong approach.

“Laws exist for the safety, welfare, and civility of our nation, and we should neither take them lightly nor reward those who break them. The proposed ‘Z-visa’ would allow illegal immigrants to stay in our country indefinitely, rewarding an estimated 12 million lawbreakers while penalizing millions of others who have applied to legally immigrate to the U.S. and become American citizens.
"Responsible immigration legislation must first address the immediate security crisis at our borders by enforcing the rule of law and improving methods for reliable employment verification. Our laws must be obeyed and respected by those who wish to live here.

“I pledge to work with my colleagues in the House and Senate to create a comprehensive solution to immigration reform that allows us to regain control of our borders without rewarding illegal behavior.”
