Washington, DC – Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative William Jefferson (D-LA), with the support of over 50 of his colleagues, introduced a resolution acknowledging the second anniversary of the 2005 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The resolution also acknowledges the progress made since the storms and the work still left to be done.
“Hurricanes Katrina and Rita marked a monumentally tragic time in the history of the city,” Jefferson said. “Nearly 2,000 people lost their lives, close to 300,000 homes were destroyed, and the entire population of a major American city was scattered across 48 states. Though that was two years ago, the struggle to recover and rebuild continues and it is time that this body pay tribute to the determined spirit and culture of the people of the Gulf Coast.”
Jefferson continued, “I am happy to see the outpouring of support for the relief of the people of the Gulf Coast evident in the overwhelming number of co-sponsors of this important resolution. I look forward to bringing it to the floor before the August recess.”
Congressman Jefferson’s resolution enjoys the support of such members as Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel, Government Reform and Oversight Chairman Henry Waxman, Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick, and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Joe Baca.
