Congressman William Jefferson Announces $15.7 Million in

Federal Funding for Regional Transit

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative William Jefferson, D-LA, announced the awarding of federal grants to the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development in the amount of $15.7 million. The two grants will be provided to the agencies without a requirement for a local funding match, freeing up local resources to address other critical needs.

Administered by the Federal Transit Administration, the $13.6 million grant to RTA will be used exclusively to operate the transit authority’s bus and streetcar services. An additional $2.1 million in federal funding will go the Louisiana DOTD to support the LA SWIFT bus line. This service, since last year, has provided express bus service between New Orleans and Baton Rouge for those residents who have been displaced from their homes.

“I am pleased that this much-needed funding will be made available to our local transit authorities,” Jefferson said. “The LA SWIFT bus line is an important resource for our citizens and our economy, while RTA continues to meet vital local transportation needs. I appreciate the support that the Department of Transportation has given us and will continue to fight for funding to restore our city.”
