| Washington, DC – U.S. Representative William Jefferson (D-LA) released the following statement in response to the President’s State of the Union address:
“The questions we hoped to get answered in tonight's address remain unanswered: How do we make our city safe enough to return; how will we deal with short and long term housing issues; and how will we rebuild our healthcare system? That's what our people were waiting to hear and we didn't get that.
“When you go through 12 pages of a speech and barely get a mention, it's hard to see that we are a priority. We need to be at the top of this nation's priorities, not at the bottom, where we find ourselves in this State of the Union address.
“There is hope that he addressed the fact that poverty and inequality existed before Katrina. But without addressing the long term affects of Katrina's aftermath, I find that hope to be only a glimmer of what we need to adequately deal with the massive task of rebuilding the Gulf Coast.”
