Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Jefferson continued his fight for the rights of those living in the Gulf Coast by supporting the Flood Insurance Reform and Modernization Act, H.R. 3121. The bill seeks to correct the deficits of the Flood Insurance Program. These insufficiencies were made ever clear in the aftermath of the devastating 2005 hurricane season.
“This bill will ease the burden carried by so many citizens of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in general,” said Jefferson of the bill. “It is much needed in a time where mainstream insurance companies are making the bar unreachable for the average and at times above average citizen.”
Under the legislation, subsidies will be phased out of the Flood Insurance Program which will help boost participation. The act also has language that would allow property owners to purchase flood and wind insurance in the same policy.
“Our area needs this on its journey to recover, and I hope that fact is remembered as others consider this bill,” said Jefferson.
