Washington, DC – Today, Congressman William J. Jefferson (D-LA), along with his colleagues from the Louisiana delegation and in the United States House of Representatives honored the men and women of Louisiana that fought in our nation’s wars by voting 383-0 to rename the post office at 701 Loyola Ave in New Orleans, the Louisiana Armed Services Veterans Post Office.
“The state of Louisiana has made many contributions to each branch of our armed services and by extension to the defense of this nation…and it is only appropriate that we memorialize them in this significant way,” said Jefferson in his floor statement.
Rep. Jefferson also stated the plight of the many Louisiana veterans that frequented the now closed Veterans’ Administration Hospital in New Orleans. “Veterans in my district have no choice but to travel long distances either to Shreveport, La or Jackson, Miss for hospital care.”
Louisiana is home to well over 370,000 uniformed veterans and New Orleans is the base for the Belle Chasse Naval Facility and the Jackson Barracks.
