Washington, DC – “Congress took a tremendous stand today by overriding President Bush’s veto of the Water Resources Development Act,” said Jefferson following the override vote. “The two billion dollars that the legislation provides for the protection of the Louisiana coastline and the city of New Orleans is not just desired it is needed and required. To leave the Gulf Coast unprotected in such a manner would have been a grave mistake that could have left hundreds of thousands of people at risk.”
The WRDA bill also authorizes the Corps of Engineers to improve the levees surrounding New Orleans to 100-year levels of protection. The veto was overridden with a vote of 361 to 54. The Senate should vote on the override later this week.
