Federal funding is being sought by Horizons for the Homeless to assist with providing services to the homeless in our region.  This project will provide services to approximately 150 homeless children in the 10th Massachusetts Congressional District.    The program is designed to provide recreation and other services to children through the use of volunteers.  The annual dollar value of those volunteers’ time is approximately $170,000 (based on the estimated dollar value of volunteer time of $22.46 per hour in Massachusetts, as reported by the organization Independent Sector.)  The great majority of homeless shelters where these programs are established report “significant” or “tremendous” positive impact on the children’s well-being and development.  Taxpayer support is needed for this program because the homeless population is growing in eastern Massachusetts and other funding sources are unable to keep up with the demand.
