Town of Hull Municipal Light Plant
15 Edgewater Road Hull, MA 02045

Amount Requested: -$1,500,000

The Town of Hull’s Municipal Light Plant in Hull Massachusetts proposed constructing the nation’s first offshore wind farm in 2010.  The most recent estimates for the project suggest the costs will range from $30-$40 million.  When finished, the town will become the first community in the United States to obtain most of its electricity from a renewable source of energy such as offshore wind energy.  The Department of Energy has already recognized the town of Hull as a national model for wind energy development and this project.  Given its widespread community involvement and public benefit, funds are needed to assist with the planning and design of the project.   Already, the state of Massachusetts has contributed $1.7 million to the project.

The federal funds would augment existing taxpayer funds and be used to make sure the cost of the project is affordable to the ratepayers of Hull.  The town also wants to use this project as part of its economic development and job creation initiatives.
