Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) is seeking federal funds for the construction of a hydrokinetic electric power system, which would utilize the current flow in the adjacent Cape Cod Canal, to produce hydrokinetic electric power for the school.
MMA has become a training lab for alternative energy in Massachusetts and there are two distinct benefits. First, the taxpayers save hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy costs that would ordinarily flow to electric utilities and oil companies. Second, the next generation of energy and environmental engineers get hands on experience in renewable and green energy.
Taxpayers will benefit from having access to new marine technologies that produce renewable energy in coastal areas.
