The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies seeks $1.84 million for the Northeast Coastal Monitoring Collaborative. The funds available for this program are to be used for a comprehensive coastal zone reconnaissance mapping using advanced remote sensing, and spectral technology. The funds will also be used to support monitoring programs and the necessary logistical support.
The Center for Coastal Studies water quality monitoring program in the northeast is used to help scientists understand and assess the impacts of various uses of our oceans. Given the added demands and new technologies being promoted along our coast, it is important for coastal managers to have access to more comprehensive water quality information.
Water quality is critical to the economic health of coastal communities. Fishing, shellfish and tourism employment are all dependent on the health and vitality of our marine waters.
Taxpayers benefit from this work because its goal it to protect the public health and promote the proper stewardship of our coast. Current levels of federal and state funding are less than adequate to support this work.
