Sesuit Harbor is an authorized federal channel. The federal government is obligated to maintain water depths for safe passage and periodic shoaling has created navigation problems for local mariners. Funds will be used for the maintenance dredging of the entrance channel. Taxpayer funds are used to fix roads and bridges, but in many cases federal funding for dredging projects are shortchanged in the budget process. Consequently, the only way the work can be done is if it is sponsored as an “earmark” by a Member of Congress. That is the case with respect to this project.
