Washington, DC -- Today, Congressman John Sarbanes was joined by Cal Ripken Jr., Senator Barbara Mikulski and representatives from the Orioles at a ceremony dedicating a section of I-395 in Baltimore as “Cal Ripken Way”.
Last year, Congressman Sarbanes introduced legislation to honor Cal Ripken Jr. on his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame by renaming the junction of highway that passes in front of Oriole Park at Camden Yards as “Cal Ripken Way”. This legislation became law in September and was supported by every member of the Maryland delegation.
“Too often, our sports stars are famous for all the wrong reasons,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “But time and time again, Cal Ripken Jr. has been a source of pride for baseball. He has been an inspiration for fans every season and continues to do so in retirement through numerous charitable works and his youth baseball foundation. The highway renaming is a fitting tribute to one of the best-loved and most enduring figures in the history of baseball.”
"When Cal Ripken Jr. was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame last summer, I went to the Senate floor to pay tribute to him because I wanted the world to know Cal Ripken Jr. as Baltimore knows Cal Ripken Jr. He is not only a fantastic baseball player, but he’s also a fantastic human being - a devoted father, faithful husband, and man of the community, giving his time and energy to philanthropic work," said Senator Mikulski. "What a great day for Baltimore - where we celebrate honor and a commitment to community and to country - to showing up every day and getting the job done. Cal may be our local boy, but he’s becoming an international hero. I am so proud to have teamed up with Congressman Sarbanes to move this proposal through Congress and to name 'Cal Ripken Way' today."
