Washington, DC -- Congressman John P. Sarbanes today announced that the State of Maryland has been awarded a federal grant of more than $4 million to address Base Realignment and Closure growth in the region. The funding comes from the United States Department of Defense’s Office of Economic Adjustment.
"This funding, to be used in coordination with significant state and local resources, is critical to ensuring that the necessary infrastructure is in place to assimilate these hard working men and women in a way that is least disruptive to Fort Meade’s surrounding communities. In Maryland, we are very proud of the military installations across our State and we stand ready to support these facilities."
"BRAC is both a tremendous opportunity and an important challenge. We should seize this moment to do the type of ambitious regional planning and infrastructure improvements that benefit quality of life for Marylanders. The new BRAC jobs will provide a new revenue source to pay for these investments."
Congressman John P. Sarbanes, MD-03 represents many communities surrounding Fort Meade. As a result of BRAC and the growth of the National Security Agency, Fort Meade is expected to receive thousands of new jobs over the next five years.
The grant will help enable the State of Maryland to enhance its capacities to assist communities, businesses and workers, as well as stimulate cooperation between state-wide and local economic adjustment activities and other planning initiatives.
