Washington, DC -- Towson, Md. – While Congress is in recess, Congressman John Sarbanes will devote his time to listening to senior citizens in the Third District. During these hard economic times senior citizens on fixed incomes have been hit especially hard. With the high cost of groceries and other household staples, many seniors have had to make hard decisions such as skipping a meal or a dose of medicine to make ends meet. A recent report by the American Association for Retired People (AARP) suggests that older Americans may be making some risky choices in the interest of saving money in tough times. The survey found that 59 percent of people 65 and older have found if more difficult in recent months to pay for essentials including food, gas and medicine. Nearly half said they have postponed paying their utility bills and 10 percent said they have cut back on medications. During the recess break Congressman Sarbanes will visit the following locations: • Monday, August 18th - The Baltimore Cash Campaign ;1111 East Cold Spring Lane League for People with Disabilities at 11:30 am to kick off a new program to help low-income people prepare their taxes to receive their economic stimulus payments. • Tuesday, August 19th – Economics and Aging, the Lansdowne Senior Center at 11am; how can we help our older generation make it through these tough economic times.
